Calculated Comics with Kolb: One-Punch Man

Review May 22, 2018 Andrew Kolb
Illustrating and keepin' it clean since '86.

One-Punch Man follows Saitama, a guy who was once a dweeb, got beat up, then trained his body to the point where he can defeat any enemy with one punch.

The series is a parody of Shonen Manga (essentially Japanese superhero comics aimed at teens) like Dragon Ball or Naruto. Enemies have long monologues, sidekicks have dramatic backstories, and all of this is undercut when Saitama finishes the fight in one panel.

Note that this series is still a manga so it reads right to left and the interior art is all black and white. There’s also a Netflix series (currently subtitled) and it’s not recommended for kids.

You might like this if you like:

  • Dragon Ball
  • Existential ennui
  • That scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones shoots the sword master instead of engaging in an epic clash
